The special section of the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports about the Contribution of Metal Corrosion Products to Archaeological Research is now complete. It was co-edited by Berber van der Meulen-van der Veen, Delphine Neff, Sharon Penton, and me. From the reconstruction of textiles metal objects were wrapped in when buried, preserved organic residues and large-scale analyses programmes for the reconstruction of metal flows to research to the formation of corrosion products – its eight papers cover various aspects and show that there is a lot of information that can be retrieved from corrosion products.
GlobaLID: new webpage
GlobaLID has now its own project webpage to present the project, the team behind it and to provide updates on all aspects of the project. Check it out and subscribe to the project blog to stay up-to-date.
Workshop on lead isotope databases
In the past three days, the GlobaLID Core team successfully hosted many experts working with lead isotope data in archaeology to discuss the future of lead isotope data and to gather important input for further work on GlobaLID. Beside an overall big encouragement to continue work, the major outcomes of the workshop are the suggestions
- To establish Regional Editors, i.e., experts for certain regions that help the Core Team with data collection and review and bring in their expertise on the local geology and archaeology
- To collaborate with GFZ Data Services instead of creating an own repository infrastructure. It was suggested that GlobaLID supervises the content and edits the data publication and that GFZ Data Services will take care of the actual publication via their infrastructure, including the minting of DOIs and archiving.

CfP: HMS Research in Progress Meeting 2023
You are cordially invited to submit an abstract to the Research in Progress Meeting 2023 of the Hisotrical Metallurgy Society. It will take place online on 22 April. You are working on any topic related to ancient or historic metallurgy/metals? That’s your opportunity to present your project! The best student presentation will win a prize.
All infos and links to the submission and registration form at https://archaeothommy.github.io/hms-rip23/
CfP: Geoscientists’ Little Helpers @Goldschmidt
You are cordially invited to submit an abstract to our session “Geoscientists’ Little Helpers – Small software tools with big impact” (Session 14c) at this year’s Goldschmidt conference. We are looking forward to learn about the small self-written tools that facilitate your life as researcher!
Abstracts to our session are exempted from the abstract fee and can be submitted in addition to another abstract.
Submission are open until March, 1 and can be made at https://conf.goldschmidt.info/goldschmidt/2023/cfp.cgi
Welcome to NADAC!
NADAC stands for “Networking Archaeological Data and Communities”. It is an NEH Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities run by The Alexandria Archive Institute / Open Context (AAI/OC). The institute offers two years of training through monthly online workshops and two in-person summer schools on four specific themes
- The Data Management Lifecycle
- Data for Professional Communication
- Data for Diverse Publics
- Data for the Classroom
I am very happy that the application of the GlobaLID Core Team was successful and that I will have the opportunity to broaden my knowledge about research data and research data management in archaeology and especially about the opportunity to get familiar with the perspective of archaeologists and archaeological scientists in the USA on this topic.
ChronochRt 0.1.2 now on CRAN
A new version of ChronochRt is now available on CRAN! It was required to keep compatibility with some packages chronochrt relies on. In addition, import_chron()
has default arguments for the columns names now.
NFDI4Earth Education Pilot
My project “Teaching Lead Isotope Geochemistry and Application in Archaeometry (LIGA-A)” was successful in this year’s round of the NFDI4Eaducational pilots!
Co-lead by Sabine Klein and me and supported by Tim Greifelt and the GlobaLID Core Team, the project aims to develop educational materials about the formation, measurement, handlung and interpretation of lead isotope signatures in archaeological contexts such as metal provenance, the reconstruction of past exchange networks, and the environmental impact of mining. A special focus of the project will be the design of educational materials that are highly accessible with regards to the software requirements and potential impairments of the learners such as colour blindness.
ChronochRt 0.1.1 now on CRAN
A new version of the ChronochRt package is now available on CRAN! It fixes some bugs, spelling etc. It does not add any new functionalities but I hope to publish them in the course of the year.
